Consumers are becoming much more conscious of the ingredients in everyday products that they use on themselves and for their families. This has motivated cosmetic and personal care formulators to reevaluate product formulations to provide simpler, shorter ingredient lists.

Several biotechnology and specialty chemical companies are ramping up marketing and commercialisation of microbial-based surfactants especially glycolipids like rhamnolipid and sophorolipids as fermentation, extraction and purification processes for these surfactants have vastly improved compared to even a few years back.

Locus Performance Ingredients launched on July 21, 2020 amid the pandemic. Company executives note that it has had an impact on laboratory uptime to a modest degree, as Locus adheres to rigorous cleaning and laboratory management practices, but there’s been no dislocations in our supply chain from vendors.

On August 4, 2020, startup company Locus Performance Ingredients (Locus PI) launched Ferma (INCI: Glycolipids), a sophorolipid series of biosurfactants to replace toxic surfactants and eliminate health and palm oil concerns in personal care products.

Branded as Locus Performance Ingredients (Locus PI), the startup develops nature-derived, high-performance biosurfactant ingredients proven to outperform petrochemical surfactants and solve top challenges in personal care, home care and industrial formulations.

Locus Performance Ingredients is a spin-off of Locus Fermentation Solutions, a 6-year-old firm that uses bioinformatics to identify chemical-making microbes and then designs custom fermenters to fit the organism. LFS provided the equivalent of angel and seed funding for LPI, which is now conducting a series A financing round.

Una nueva startup, Locus PI, ofrece alternativas ecológicas a los tensioactivos petroquímicos y derivados de la palma, basadas en la misma tecnología utilizada para hacer cerveza.

A new startup is offering eco-friendly alternatives to petrochemical- and palm-derived surfactants, based on the same technology used to make beer. Locus Performance Ingredients, a new operating company under Locus Fermentation Solutions, develops nature-derived, high-performance biosurfactant ingredients using a unique microbrewery production method.
